FAMILIES FACE SAVAGE CUTS AS LISBON THREATS BECOME REALITY

Cóir Date: 25.11.2010

The pro-sovereignty organisation Cóir, has said that families, children, and the poorest and most vulnerable in society now faced a bleak future as the effects of the EU and IMF take-over are revealed.  In a week when the last vestiges of Irish sovereignty were torn away, Cóir spokesman Manus Mac Meanmain said that as the facade continued to unravel, the people would not forget the lies told during the Lisbon Treaty.
"We were told that we would remain sovereign and independent - that's been shown to be a absolute lie. We were told the minimum wage wouldn't be touched - the EU has been here seven days and it's been slashed by 12% already. Yes campaigners insisted that the EU could never touch corporation tax - that's now been quietly forgotten. The French and Germans insist that it's on the table and it'll stay there as long as they are in charge of this country," he said.

Mr Mac Meanmain added that it was "sickening" to see how the political elite had sold the nation and the sovereignty won by the sacrifice of brave men and women in order to placate their masters in the EU and said that the Union's  greedy and reckless policies were very much part of the country's problems in the first place.

"The EU kept interest rates low from 2004-2008 which suited the German's but helped to cause a bubble in Ireland," he pointed out. "They insisted we extend the bank guarantee which meant our borrowing costs became unsustainable. As we pointed out during the Lisbon campaign, if you hand over all the power to an external body, don't expect that body to put your interests first."

The Cóir spokesman said that the EU bailout was not a rescue. "The EU and the IMF aren't here to save us," he remarked. "They're here to save the euro and the French and German banks and our sorry excuse for a government have handed our country over to them."
