Cóir Date: 16.11.2010 The pro-sovereignty campaign, Cóir, has said that the European Union is pushing Ireland towards an 'economic disaster' and that the larger EU states, empowered and emboldened by the Lisbon Treaty, were putting their own interests ahead of what was best for Ireland's economy. Spokesman Richard Greene also said that a forced EU bailout would mean "an unprecedented and wholly shameful dereliction of duty by those who had sworn to uphold Ireland's sovereignty but who had, in fact, colluded to sell it for even less than thirty pieces of silver."
"First the EU bullied the Irish government into protecting the greedy reckless banks, then they heaped savage budgets cuts on the Irish taxpayer by insisting that we adhere to their timetable in reducing our debt, and now they want to take full control of our economy," said Mr Greene. "This has all been made possible by the erosion of our sovereignty by successive EU treaties, culminating in the Lisbon Treaty last year."
"Anti-Lisbon campaigners were called liars when we pointed out that the EU post-Lisbon would be hugely weighted in favour of the bigger states, but that's exactly what's happened," added the Cóir spokesman.
He also said that the ordinary taxpayer and citizen was now feeling the lash of EU policy which didn't prioritise the needs of Ireland or her people. "People were bullied and threatened into giving up our sovereignty - into changing the EU from a union of equals to a club where the powerful control decision-making and policy."
Cóir said that the Irish government should, for the first time in a generation, put the people ahead of their EU masters. "They have a window of opportunity now to do the right thing," said Mr Greene. "Otherwise we're looking at a very grim future where Ireland, our economy and our children's future becomes an irrelevant player on the periphery of Europe."
