Respect the Vote PDF Print E-mail

November 2008

Cóir’s campaign to ensure that the government should Respect the Vote has now been brought to a significant section of the electorate. The Lisbon Treaty is dead - and the wishes of the people must be respected or our Constitution is meaningless, since it declares the people sovereign.  It’s important to understand what respecting the vote entails. It doesn’t mean getting concessions or changes to the Lisbon Treaty. It doesn’t mean supporting a second referendum if the government offers worthless promises to look out for pro-life interests. It doesn’t mean that Lisbon can be improved by declarations which have no legal standing.

It means the treaty is dead in the water and ratification of the treaty must stop.

In the past few weeks we’ve seen some parties drawn into consultation with Oireachtas committees supposedly trying to understand why the Irish people voted NO to a treaty that was undemocratic and essentially a recipe for how larger nations would have more power over the smaller ones; a new empire in the making. These committees have refused to rule out a second vote on Lisbon and are part of a softening-up process whose aim is to brainwash, trick and bully the Irish people to accept  another referendum and make them forget that constitutionally the debate is over. In short, to make the people forget that their democratic wishes and constitutional rights are being ignored and trampled on. Cóir gives its members and supporters this guarantee: we will never go before an Oireachtas committee and offer or accept a deal.

We have no authority to do so - the 862,415 people who voted NO did not ask for secret deals to be made, they simply voted down the treaty. And we won’t compromise the very reasons why we were founded in the first place and why so many people supported our campaign. The issues highlighted by Cóir were very simple and straightforward and need no navel-gazing committee funded by scarce taxpayers’ money to unravel them. We want to defend our national sovereignty and in doing so safeguard our national resources for the prosperity of our people, defend the right of the future citizens of our nation - the unborn, protect the health and the lives of our elderly and our Christian family values by not having anti-life and anti-family legislation imposed on us by a new Superstate in the making, whose charter of fundamental rights excludes the rights of the unborn.

We must not forget the lies told us before the Lisbon vote on the 12th of June. We must expose the blatant lies that they are telling us now. We have various Eurobureaucrats and bought journalists telling us that the only way out of our present economic woes is to support a federalist Europe. We know that the economic problems facing us now are facing every nation in the world at the moment and the Lisbon Treaty being passed will not make a tiny bit of difference to these global financial events. The treaty may, however, have restricted our government’s right to act unilateraly in our nation’s interest - and this information is being passed on to the voter by our Respect the Vote campaign.

We have a well paid Eurocrat, Mr. John Bruton, (already well compensated with various pensions from being a former taoiseach and minister) spinning a yarn that American businessmen are very disappointed that we voted NO to the Lisbon treaty and thus lost our influence in Europe. The truth is, as the IDA recently confirmed, foreign direct investment into Ireland has not been negatively affected by our rejection of the Lisbon Treaty.

We need to bring these truths and others to the people. And we will do so with the same combination of hard work, innovation, commitment and prayer that won the victory on June 12th. Please call 01 8746858 today to sign up.

I am ravished by the implausability of that last statement. Given your comment I believe you may well have learning difficulties or more likely are just a reactive, ill educated bigot.
